EPIDEMIOLOGY: ASSESSING YOUNG PEOPLE'S MEDIA HEALTH
Epidemiology is best understood in the context of health care and medicine. It’s the investigation and study of the incidence and impact of disease and health conditions, working towards a goal of understanding causes and offering possible preventative strategies.
With #Instafame, we’ve used the framework of epidemiological study to look at how and why young people are so hungry for “fame”. Our goal is to put some of the evolving fame building practices of youth under the microscope and #askthehardquestions. Are these part of the normal youth developmental trajectory of risk taking and discovery, or is this something else? Are these healthy, modern communication practices or dysfunctional behaviours that track to vulnerable adolescent populations? Is posting vapid, provocative images and chronicling every aspect of your life through selfies, entrepreneurial and raw youthful ambition or is this a mass cry for help?
